The Strategic Significance of Greek-US Shipping Cooperation
In an interview with Naftemporiki, former US Ambassador to Athens, George Tsunis, emphasized the critical partnership between Greece and the United States in the shipping sector, along with the pivotal role played by Greek shipowners.
The Preeminence of Greek Shipping
Tsunis remarked, “This sector is not only vital for Greece but also a key player on the global stage.” Speaking at the 9th Shipping Conference of “N,” he highlighted that “90% of world trade is transported by sea, with Greek vessels accounting for about 20% of that.”
Reflecting on his time at Harvard Business School, Tsunis noted that he studied Greek shipping as a model of industry leadership and success: “We examined the case of Greek shipping’s dominance and its remarkable business journey, even producing films about notable figures like Onassis. The contemporary developments are even more impressive.”
Support During Economic Challenges
Tsunis highlighted the backing provided by the United States to the Greek shipping sector, particularly during Greece’s economic downturn. “As Greek financial institutions pulled back, it was Americans who offered the necessary funds to support the growth of Greek shipping companies,” he explained.
“Today, there are 30 Greek shipping firms listed on Wall Street, enabling them to access US capital markets and facilitating their expansion,” he added.
Revitalizing Greece’s Shipbuilding Industry
Tsunis also addressed the urgent need to rejuvenate Greece’s shipbuilding sector. Noting that most new vessels are currently built in China, South Korea, and Japan, he stressed the importance of bringing services back to Greece.
“It is crucial to continue developing Greek shipbuilding facilities and the surrounding ecosystem—technology, suppliers, and maintenance,” he remarked. He specifically mentioned ABS’s initiative to relocate 200 jobs from abroad to Greece, emphasizing that such actions benefit both the Greek economy and shipping industry.
