In 2024, the Greek merchant fleet showcased another remarkable year of international engagement, boasting 5,722 active ships and 157,634 port calls globally. This represents a 1% growth from 2023, when the fleet included 5,666 vessels, accompanied by a 1% rise in port calls, up from 156,145, as per data from Lloyd’s List Intelligence.
China emerged as the leading destination, recording 13,304 arrivals and a throughput capacity of 1.35 billion dwt. The United States followed in second place with 670 million dwt, while Brazil and India continued to demonstrate strong performance.
Bulk carriers showed notable mobility, increasing by 4% (from 2,786 to 2,894 vessels) and representing 36% of total port calls. Tankers topped the list by deadweight tonnage (39%). Greek ports accounted for 21,611 arrivals, making up 14% of the total traffic, with Piraeus and Elefsina attracting the largest volumes.
Although Greek shipowners steered clear of the Red Sea in 2024 due to Houthi attacks, they began re-engaging in the region early in 2025 as the threat significantly diminished. This adaptability underscores Greek shipping’s resilience and leadership amid a backdrop of geopolitical uncertainty.
