A 53-year-old man was apprehended in Alimos after authorities discovered he was in possession of valuable ancient artifacts, including amphorae that date back to the 5th century BC as well as the Byzantine era.
He is charged with theft and misappropriation of highly valuable cultural heritage, failing to declare antiquities as required by law, and violations related to firearms.
On Thursday morning, officers from the Southeastern Attica Crime Investigation Unit arrested the suspect in Alimos. After gathering intelligence, police discreetly monitored him. A search of his vehicle resulted in the confiscation of:
- Three underwater amphorae with pointed bases, dating from the 5th to 3rd century BC,
- One underwater amphora with a pointed base dated between the 5th and 1st century BC,
- One underwater amphora from the Byzantine period, and
- A hunting rifle.
The amphorae were transported to the unit’s headquarters for examination by an archaeologist from the Ephorate of Antiquities of Piraeus and Islands, who confirmed that these artifacts are protected under the Law on the Protection of Antiquities.
The arrested individual has since been taken to the Athens Public Prosecutor’s Office.
