Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for Economic Diplomacy and Extroversion, Mr. Tasos Hatzivasileiou, stated on Real FM this morning that “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is dedicated to enhancing the global outlook and export capabilities of Greek businesses.”
Currently in Madrid leading a business delegation, he highlighted that Greek producers and exporters are participating in a significant business forum, which presents them with the opportunity to penetrate the Spanish market—another major European market with a high demand for Greek products. “This marks the first mission of its kind to Spain in years,” he emphasized.
In response to inquiries from journalists Nikos Hatzinikolaou and Katia Makri, he pointed out that it is a diplomatic achievement for Greece that discussions around cooperation between a third country—such as Turkey—and the European Union in the defense sector require unanimous agreement.
“Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis approach foreign policy with seriousness and foresight. The government advocates for proactive diplomacy within the framework of international law, rather than inaction,” he stated. He added, “It is unacceptable for a third country to seek EU funding and engage in defense programs while simultaneously threatening military action against an EU member state like Greece.”
Addressing criticisms from the opposition, he remarked, “There is no need for fearmongering; what we require is a serious approach. We base our discussions on facts. Anyone who questions this should refer to the European documents.”
On the Cyprus issue, the Deputy Minister reaffirmed Greece’s unwavering support for the Republic of Cyprus, insisting—along with the international community—on the only viable solution: a bizonal, bicommunal federation in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions.
Regarding the situation in Gaza, he mentioned that Greece, acting as the current chair of the UN Security Council, is leading initiatives aimed at ending hostilities and facilitating immediate humanitarian aid. He also referenced a joint statement by 80 UN member states—achieved through Greece’s initiative alongside Mr. Gerapetritis in New York—calling for the protection of civilians in conflict zones, including Gaza.
