The U.S. Supreme Court has granted the Donald Trump administration the authority to suspend a program initiated by the Biden administration. This program allowed over 500,000 undocumented immigrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela to reside and work temporarily in the United States.
Counting past rulings, nearly one million undocumented immigrants find their legal status uncertain and face the threat of deportation.
In May, this marks the second occasion the Supreme Court has supported Trump’s efforts to revoke these immigrants’ temporary legal status. Earlier, the Court permitted the administration to terminate another program that offered work permits to many Venezuelan immigrants.
This earlier ruling followed a swift proceeding where the U.S. government challenged a judge’s temporary hold in Boston.
According to CNN, this decision is not final; the case will proceed through lower courts. However, it enables the government to accelerate deportations of those who previously benefited from the program.
