Greek: The domestic helper is claiming a house from an elderly woman she cared for who has passed away – What her lawyer says

The investigation into the recent deaths of an elderly mother and her two children in Elliniko is ongoing, with homicide officers examining the case. The Bulgarian domestic helper, employed since last February to assist the family with health issues, has been a focal point of scrutiny from the start.

Her attorney, Konstantinos Gregovits, asserts that she “has nothing to hide” and has already cooperated with the Greek Police (GADA) regarding the situation. Interestingly, it has emerged that the 55-year-old is legally pursuing ownership of the residence she occupies, previously owned by the deceased elderly woman, as reported by MEGA.

A witness stated that the helper claimed the property “had been transferred to her name, but she needed to formalize the inheritance.” On October 4th, she visited a lawyer to initiate a claim for the house, which currently has no registered owner.

In her lawsuit, she asserts that she has lived in the home since 1997, after receiving a verbal agreement from the owner to leave the property to her. She claims not to have discovered any relatives of the deceased.

Her lawsuit statement reads:
“This apartment was purchased in 1986 by the elderly woman. Since 1997, I have had an informal arrangement with the owner and have resided there permanently, as she transferred ownership to me and distanced herself from the property. Specifically, from March 1997, the owner assured me that she would gift me the property, with plans for a formal contract in the future. I needed to secure funds for transfer taxes to finalize the sale. After taking occupancy, I have lived here continuously, regarding it as my primary residence. I have made repairs, hosted family and friends, possess the only key, and do not allow others entrance without permission. I pay all bills and have updated the kitchen and wardrobes. I have never encountered anyone contesting the property.
Therefore, I request to be registered in the Land Registry as the sole owner.”

A witness recounted that the helper had met the elderly woman through the church after her divorce, and they shared a semi-basement apartment:
“It was spacious, with a kitchen, a small hall, a toilet, and two rooms. Eventually, the elderly woman passed away. She told me that the house had transferred to her name but needed the inheritance acknowledged. If there were no family, why let the house go unused? She registered it because she cared for her,” he noted.

The helper had been employed selling artichokes at the market from early morning until late afternoon, with additional jobs serving at cafes and gaming venues.

After traveling to Bulgaria in 2012, I lost touch with her around 2013. She had opened a shop there for children’s parties, but eventually returned,” the witness added.

Her lawyer, Konstantinos Gregovits, who represents her but not in regard to the property claim, told MEGA:
“I’ve known her for two decades, and this is the first I hear about the house claims. I know she resides there. If she wishes to pursue legal action, that is her choice. A person living in a house and paying its bills has grounds to claim ownership, and the court will adjudicate.”

He further commented:
“Are these details sufficient to accuse a woman of murder? I know she voluntarily went to GADA and provided a statement. She has nothing to conceal. What concerns me is that she knew the third deceased individual, Michalis, whom she met at the hospital, and he died a while later. What connection could she have to that?”

He also expressed concerns about the investigation process and evidence:
“Maybe we’re jumping to conclusions; perhaps patience is warranted. I find it odd that police visited the hospital. A woman presented herself as Michalis’s friend, seeking signatures. We will be transparent; nothing will go missing. Let’s wait for the hospital findings. We’re available.”

Regarding missing valuables, he mentioned:
“Wallets, bank cards, and a wedding ring were among the items unaccounted for during the police investigation.”

Stelios Sourlas, representing the deceased relatives in Elliniko, reported that no valuables were recovered during the police search:
“I don’t make accusations. Tomorrow, the first cousin will lodge a complaint against all responsible parties and will request to lift phone and bank privacy. He will also file a lawsuit for embezzlement due to the missing belongings of the deceased, including Michalis Sidirópoulos’s laptop, Katerina’s wedding ring, and their bank and credit cards. Additionally, the valuable jewelry Bera was wearing is also missing.”

He added:
“The 135 sq.m. house was owned by Michalis and Bera, and since the grandmother has passed, her share has been inherited. The house is valued between 300,000 and 400,000 euros.”

Finally, the housekeeper commented on the Elliniko family:
“At the end of March, I don’t recall exactly because time has become unclear. I visited briefly; I didn’t stay or cook much. I cooked only twice for Mrs. Bera when she was in the hospital and brought food for Mrs. Katerina. That’s it.”

When asked about health issues, she replied:
“Yes, when we went to the Voula hospital, the doctor recognized the woman.” When asked if anyone attempted to forge a signature from the family, she responded:
“I’m not aware of what others have done. I told the police what I know. I have nothing further to say. Sorry.”
