In a pressing inquiry to the European Commission, New Democracy MEP G. Avtias is urging immediate action to support Chios, which is currently grappling with fires at the onset of the summer season.
He stated:
Since Sunday afternoon, June 22, 2025, three separate fires have erupted in Chios and are rapidly spreading across the island due to high winds. Despite the valiant efforts of firefighting teams, the flames have reignited in several spots, leading to the evacuation of 17 communities for safety and causing numerous areas to lose power and access to essential supplies.
As reported by the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, firefighting units in Greece have responded to 110 fires in various locations over the past 48 hours.
Given this information, will the European Commission address the following:
1) Will the European Solidarity Fund be activated to aid those impacted by the fires?
2) Is there an intention to finance the establishment of a European firefighting force to assist Mediterranean nations affected by wildfires?
3) Will additional resources be allocated to Member States to strengthen their capabilities in fire prevention and response?
4) Will compensation for fire victims be processed within 12 weeks, as recently indicated by the Commissioner for Cohesion in response to my inquiry?
