Airbnb is entering a transformative phase, expanding its offerings beyond traditional short-term rentals. The platform now features services like private chefs, massages, and personal trainers. CEO Brian Chesky highlighted that while travelers typically choose hotels for their amenities and Airbnbs for their spaciousness, users can now enjoy “the best of both worlds.”
This enhancement comes amid concerns of a potential drop in U.S. bookings, attributed to President Donald Trump’s unpredictable economic policies, which are affecting consumer confidence. Despite hosting over two billion guests since its inception in 2008, Airbnb faces ongoing challenges.
Several cities have enacted restrictions on short-term rentals to address housing shortages linked to overtourism.
Affordable Luxury Services
The new offerings, available in 260 cities, start at under $50. Services include spa treatments, photographers, and makeup artists, and can even be requested by non-guests. Additionally, the revamped app allows users to arrange personalized excursions and activities—a feature that debuted in 2016.
These hotel-like amenities signal the changing preferences of travelers, according to Gary Bowerman, director of the travel marketing firm Check-in Asia, in a BBC interview.
Another exciting aspect of the updated app is the “Originals” tab, which features unique experiences globally—such as a beach volleyball match in Rio de Janeiro with Olympic medalist Carol Solberg, or spending a day with NFL star Patrick Mahomes.
