Federico Carrasco studied computer science at the University of Patras and is known for his appearances at seminars on secret agents, organized by a self-proclaimed “expert in Turkish affairs” associated with the European Parliament. He has founded several companies, including one focused on homeopathy, though many of them seem inactive now. Carrasco resides in Switzerland and became prominent in Greece as “the Italian expert.”
His recent appearance alongside expert Vasilis Kokotsakis on a TV show brought him into the spotlight after he questioned the authenticity of videos depicting the freight train incident in Tempi, eliciting a strong backlash from New Democracy (ND), which referred to him as an “Italian expert” in their statement.
Mr. Carrasco has yet to respond but may do so during a seminar in Heraklion today, where he is scheduled to discuss secret agents and espionage. However, questions have arisen about the credibility of the seminar’s organizer, who claims to be an “expert of the European Parliament,” a title that seems unverifiable.
The seminar will cover topics like “Metaverse, commerce, advertising, branding, tourism, education, and information.” Attendance is available online for 20 euros. Carrasco asserts his expertise in these areas, particularly digital media verification. But who exactly is Federico Carrasco?
While ND accuses SYRIZA of using him to evoke memories of the “Florence Institute era,” Carrasco possesses considerable knowledge of Greek matters. After graduating from the University of Patras (1988–1993) with a degree in computer engineering, he describes himself as an entrepreneur and computer scientist.
The university’s website states: “Mr. Federico Carrasco graduated from the Department of Computer Engineering and Informatics of the University of Patras and is the founder and CEO of Graypes GmbH.” He describes his career journey as one driven by a passion for electronics and software, where he learned to think “differently.” Since starting his entrepreneurial path in 2008, he has aimed to pursue meaningful ideas beyond mere financial gain.
From homeopathy to… espionage
His first venture was Life Tree, an online business specializing in homeopathy, which now appears to have only one employee in Kabul, no physical location, and its website redirects to a site featuring Chinese novels.
Carrasco is also identified as the founder of Graypes, a Swiss-based firm that utilizes algorithms and AI to assess businesses, provide targeted advice, and streamline product development and investment processes, thus significantly cutting down on assessment time and costs.
In the meantime, when not occupied with his company, Mr. Carrasco—who speaks fluent Greek—makes appearances on various videos and podcasts (such as “Pitsirikos” and “Before the Black Sheep Crows”) discussing geopolitical, military, and technological subjects.
However, there is no evidence in his biography suggesting that Mr. Carrasco possesses any specialized qualifications in forensic video analysis or media authenticity verification. He has not been recognized as a court expert in such fields. Instead, his expertise relates primarily to startups, entrepreneurship, business strategy, software engineering, project management, and software development, as a member of the Technical Advisory Group for the families and victims of the Tempi tragedy.
Additionally, Mr. Carrasco is noted as a specialist collaborator for spystories.gr, which is linked to Mr. Kostas Pikramenos, the organizer of the “intelligence seminars” Carrasco participates in. Pikramenos claims to be the founder of CP Consulting and an expert affiliated with the European Parliament on various intelligence-related matters, a title that also lacks verification as his name does not appear in official registers for experts of the European Parliament.
Returning to Federico Carrasco. His LinkedIn profile highlights his experience in “international business, complex projects, and innovative products,” including roles such as CEO and project manager. He presents himself as a “dynamic, visionary, interdisciplinary executive with over 30 years of experience in IT and startups.”
Also, in 2024, he completed a course at MIT on human psychology. His recent role as CEO of Metasteps complements his positions listed on his resume, which includes experiences with the Research and Technology Center, Intel (as a part-time consultant), Facebook, and Viss, a video search technology company he co-founded. He claims to have worked at Viss from 2010 to 2013, though the company currently lacks an operational website and shares an address with a flyer distribution business.
