A state of emergency has been declared in Sicily due to increased activity from Mount Etna, which has erupted multiple times in recent hours.
Footage from the area depicts tourists rushing to escape clouds of ash and gases, seeking safety.
Mount Etna, Europe’s most active volcano, has experienced continuous eruptions of growing intensity. The latest eruption has been classified as Strombolian, characterized by frequent and explosive emissions of lava and gas, though it hasn’t resulted in widespread destruction.
Report from the Italian Geophysical and Volcanological Institute
The Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology issued an update on Monday morning about the eruptions at Mount Etna.
“In the past few hours, the volcanic activity noted in our earlier report at 4:14 a.m. (3:14 a.m. BST) has persisted with increasingly intense Strombolian eruptions. These eruptions are currently strong and nearly continuous.”
“Recently, a light dusting of fine ash has settled in the Piano Vetore area.”
Located on Sicily’s eastern coast, Mount Etna is among the world’s most active volcanoes and has been particularly active over the past five years.
