Authorities in Thessaloniki have arrested 36-year-old Konstantinos Michalitsanos, who is accused of renting the apartment from which a 38-year-old woman from Georgia, Snizana Paraskevaidou, died after an explosive device she was carrying detonated at a bank.
During an initial assessment by the Anti-Terrorism Unit (TEM), officials discovered high explosives, eight standard detonators, and a small quantity of TD in the apartment, totaling an estimated one kilogram of explosives.
The apartment, located in the Ladadika area, was reportedly rented just last Wednesday.
The Explosion and the Woman’s Background
It is important to note that Paraskevaidou died following an explosion outside a closed parking area linked to a bank in an apartment building in central Thessaloniki shortly after 5 a.m. on Saturday, March 5.
She did not construct the explosive device herself; rather, she was tasked with retrieving it from a location in Ladadika and transporting it to Agios Dimitriou Street, where it exploded in her hands.
Paraskevaidou was known to police due to her history of involvement in various criminal activities. Authorities are investigating possible ties to organized crime. Her previous offenses include robbery, drug trafficking, and illegal possession of weapons.
In 2021, she was arrested alongside an accomplice and charged with illegal weapon possession (including a Kalashnikov), drug-related offenses, and aiding criminal activities.
The National Police have indicated that they do not believe the explosion was terrorist-related but are exploring connections to a known robber currently in prison.
