During a routine briefing at the Kremlin, spokesman Dmitry Peskov addressed comments made by US President Donald Trump, who asserted that the Russian president has “completely lost his mind” due to his ongoing aggression towards Ukraine.
In a diplomatically phrased response, Peskov steered clear of direct confrontation with Trump. He emphasized that “the initiation of the negotiation process, driven by significant efforts from the American side, is a crucial achievement, and we extend our gratitude to the Americans and especially to President Trump for facilitating this process.”
Peskov further elaborated in a more measured tone, attributing Trump’s remarks to a context of intense emotions: “This moment is significant, marked by the emotional states of all parties involved and their strong reactions.”
He acknowledged the emotional climate while clarifying that Moscow will not be swayed by Trump’s words: “We are closely observing all reactions. However, President Putin is making decisions based solely on what is necessary for the security of our nation.”
Peskov also claimed that Kyiv threatened foreign leaders visiting Moscow for Victory Day, alleging that “many leaders present witnessed attempts by the Kyiv regime to strike Russian territory with drones, targeting major cities, including the capital, ahead of such a significant day.” He noted that these attacks persist, and “we are compelled to respond. President Putin is acting in accordance with what is necessary for Russia’s security.”
In addition, Peskov remarked that recent large-scale airstrikes on Ukraine are a reaction to Kyiv’s assaults on Russian infrastructure: “We have observed how the Ukrainians are targeting our social infrastructure, affecting our citizens’ social security systems. These strikes focus on military installations and targets,” he stated.
