Nepalese climber Kami Rita achieved his 31st ascent of Everest yesterday, setting a new personal record for summiting the world’s highest peak, as announced by the expedition company.
“Congratulations to the legendary Kami Rita on his historic 31st successful climb of Everest, marking the highest number of ascents ever,” stated Seven Summit Treks.
A mountain guide for over 20 years, Kami Rita, now 55, first reached the “Summit of the World” at 8,849 meters in 1994 during a commercial expedition.
Since then, he has summited Everest nearly every year while leading clients.
In 2024, the climber reached the summit twice, setting new records each time.
“I’m proud of this record, but records are meant to be broken,” he told Agence France-Presse on May 12, 2024, following his 29th ascent.
Known as “Mr. Everest,” Kami Rita was born in 1970 in Thame, a village known for producing experienced climbers. He grew up in the Himalayan valley, watching his father and brother go on expeditions as mountain guides (sherpas), and eventually followed in their footsteps.
In 2019, he remarkably summited Everest twice within six days.
Mount Everest was first officially reached on May 29, 1953, by New Zealand climber Edmund Hillary and Nepalese sherpa Tenzing Norgay. Since then, over 8,000 individuals have conquered it. Last year, more than 800 climbers reached the summit, with 74 ascending from the northern side in Tibet.
