An emergency videoconference convened by the European Union’s foreign ministers focused primarily on the situation in the Middle East.
During a subsequent press conference, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, stressed, “The ministers urged all parties to comply with international law and exercise restraint.” She underscored that diplomacy is the only effective means to stabilize the region and highlighted the need to avoid actions that could lead to further escalation.
“There is a collective agreement on the critical need to prevent escalation,” she added.
Regarding Iran’s Nuclear Program
Kallas also discussed Iran’s nuclear program, reaffirming the EU’s firm position:
“We cannot afford to be lenient while Iran accelerates its nuclear endeavors,” she emphasized.
She reiterated that “Iran must be prevented from acquiring nuclear weapons; diplomacy is key to achieving that — the EU is committed to its role.”
She mentioned a recent call with her Iranian counterpart, where both recognized the necessity of a diplomatic resolution and how Europe can assist in that process.
In response to queries about potential U.S. involvement, Kallas noted that she spoke with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who indicated that “it is not in the United States’ interest to get involved in this conflict.”
EU’s Support Role and Specific Actions
The ministers expressed their support for Kallas’ de-escalation efforts and confirmed that a diplomatic solution is the most effective long-term strategy for addressing Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
“Last week, the International Atomic Energy Agency reported that Iran is breaching its non-proliferation commitments,” Kallas remarked.
The ministers also discussed concrete steps the EU is implementing in response to the crisis, including:
- Activating civil protection mechanisms for EU citizens looking to exit the region.
- Developing a protective plan for commercial vessels to guard against assaults by Yemen’s Houthi rebels, while maintaining situational awareness.
Attention on Gaza and Ukraine
Kallas emphasized that “we will not shift our focus away from Gaza.”
She also addressed the recent attacks by Russia on Kyiv:
“Yesterday, Russia executed one of its most devastating airstrikes on Kyiv. Russia continues its relentless assaults, targeting civilians and exacerbating the conflict,” she concluded.
