Emmanuel Kunde, a pivotal figure in Cameroon’s football history, has died at the age of 68, as confirmed by the country’s football federation.
Kunde made 102 appearances for the national team and played in two World Cups: 1982 in Spain and 1990 in Italy. At the latter tournament, Cameroon became the first African team to reach the quarter-finals. Unfortunately, Kunde’s attempt at scoring during the quarter-final against England from a penalty was saved, leading to a 3-2 loss for Cameroon after extra time, thus ending their impressive journey.
Kunde also netted a decisive penalty that clinched the title for Cameroon at the 1988 Africa Cup of Nations, leading to a 1-0 victory over Nigeria in the final. Though primarily a defender, Kunde scored 17 goals for the national team, which also captured the African Cup of Nations title in 1984 and reached the finals in 1986.
