The Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Dick Schoof, has announced his resignation just hours after the leader of the anti-Muslim PVV party, Geert Wilders, withdrew from the governing coalition, a move that is likely to trigger early elections.
Ministers from the PVV will depart from the government, which will continue operating in a caretaker role.
Schoof criticized Wilders’ decision as “irresponsible.” He stated, “In recent days, I have repeatedly informed the four party leaders that in my opinion, the government’s collapse was unnecessary and irresponsible.” He affirmed he would remain in his position until a new government is established.
The elections are not expected to occur before October. Typically, due to the fragmented political landscape in the Netherlands, forming a new government can take several months.
Earlier, Wilders announced his party’s exit from the coalition, citing a lack of support for his proposals concerning asylum and illegal immigration from the other three partners. “No agreement was reached on our asylum plan. The PVV is leaving the coalition.” he announced on platform X.
The other parties in the coalition could attempt to govern as a minority, but this is not anticipated. Opposition parties have called for immediate parliamentary elections.
