Update: The phone call between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin was extensive, lasting two hours, with the aim of negotiating a ceasefire in Ukraine, as reported by Ria Novosti. Putin described the conversation as “sincere and productive.”
Following this, Trump is set to speak with Volodymyr Zelensky, with whom he has reportedly communicated prior to the call with Putin.
Moscow appears to have suggested initiating discussions to draft a memorandum with Kyiv aimed at starting the peace process. Leaks from Russia indicate that a ceasefire could be possible, contingent on certain conditions. The recent bilateral meeting in Istanbul is viewed as a positive step. Both Russia and Ukraine must find common ground through mutual concessions. Further details from the phone call will be released later.
As per Reuters, Putin made the call from a music school in Sochi along the Black Sea, while Trump was in Washington. Reports indicate the two communicated via encrypted lines, with interpreters present, as Putin, who speaks some English, prefers to negotiate in Russian.
Goals of Both Parties
Previously, Trump expressed through the White House his frustration and disappointment, emphasizing that his priority as U.S. president is to end the war. Vice President Mike Pence echoed this sentiment, suggesting that if Moscow and Kyiv cannot come to an agreement, the U.S. should clarify, “this war is not ours.”
However, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia is prepared to seek solutions but cautioned that the process could be long and challenging, managing expectations.
According to Sky News analyst Michael Clarke, Putin seeks a quick summit to mitigate his “pariah status.” Yet, the sooner that meeting occurs, the more pressure he faces to agree to a ceasefire. Clarke suggests Putin will manage the details and timing to maximize his ability to maintain hostilities.
Currently, Trump is engaged in phone discussions with Putin aimed at achieving a ceasefire in Ukraine, and he has announced that he will later communicate with Zelensky. The White House states that the objective is to secure a ceasefire.
Earlier, Trump reiterated through the White House that the goal is to conclude the war. Vice President Pence also remarked that if there is no agreement between Moscow and Kyiv, the U.S. should declare, “This war is not ours.”
