The Minister of Defense, Nikos Dendias, referred to the launch of the FDI frigate HS Formion for the Hellenic Navy at the Naval Group shipyards in Lorient, France, as “a significant moment for the nation, the Armed Forces, the Navy, and personally for me.”
“Standing here on the helipad of the 3rd FDI, the HS Formion, I recently had the opportunity to announce that we are close to finalizing discussions for the acquisition of a 4th FDI frigate, the HS Themistocles,” Mr. Dendias stated. He emphasized, “A crucial aspect of this 4th frigate program is the involvement of the Greek defense industry, which will contribute a 25% share. This is the first major defense program where the Greek defense industry plays a significant role as a co-producer, moving us from being mere clients to active participants in defense technology production.”
“I want to emphasize that this is just the beginning. With the support of our new approach outlined in the 2030 Agenda, ELKAK, and the funds being mobilized through ReArm Europe, our country is poised to enter a new era. This will enable us to not only strengthen our Armed Forces and cultivate a robust defense innovation ecosystem but also drive growth, wealth, and job creation in Greek society. It will facilitate the return of highly skilled young Greeks who left during the last decade’s crisis, allowing them to contribute to this significant initiative,” Mr. Dendias concluded.
