The Minister of National Defence, Nikos Dendias, announced today a new series of mergers involving units and formations within the Armed Forces as part of the New Structure initiative.
“We have established a new framework and are moving forward with the consolidation of camps, units, and formations. However, the primary goal is to transform the culture and the approach to our operations,” Dendias emphasized. He elaborated that the Achilles’ Shield represents not only a fresh perspective on weapon systems but also this cultural shift, speaking at the two-day “Greece 2025-2030” conference organized by Next is Now and Dome Consulting Firm.
He also hinted at potential upgrades to the “Shield,” explaining, “The nation’s defense encompasses all components, including the five layers of the Shield and the anticipated sixth layer—our satellites,” and revealed plans to incorporate the anti-drone system “Centaurus” across the entire Navy fleet.
“We will procure Centaurus for all Greek ships from this point forward. Its cost is approximately half of a comparable system from abroad, and it is a homegrown solution,” the Defence Minister stated, emphasizing Greek participation in procurement from major platforms at a rate of 25%.
“The successful negotiation for a fourth Belharra frigate marks a significant achievement, joining the existing three. Notably, this frigate, unlike its predecessors, will be equipped with strategic weaponry, including the next-generation SCALP Naval cruise missiles. This exemplifies our new approach to defense,” Dendias remarked.
Amid rising tensions, he pointed out, “When we consider Turkey’s military spending, our ratio stands at about one to nine or ten,” responding to comments from PASOK President Nikos Androulakis.
“National Approach”
“One important point I completely agree with Mr. Androulakis on is that a national approach is essential—a unified stance on issues where dialogue is possible, but a coherent national strategy must support any final decisions,” Dendias concluded.
