On Monday morning, residents of Heraklion woke up to find their streets and vehicles covered in a thick layer of dust, the result of a significant African dust event that recently affected Crete.
As reported by Creta24.gr, Kaloust Paragamian, director of the Institute of Speleological Research of Greece, estimated that on Sunday, May 25th, about 21 kilograms of dust per acre fell in Heraklion. He even shared a magnified image of the dust observed through a stereoscope.
The sight was striking. By Monday, it was clear that all roads and cars were heavily coated in dust.
Paragamian mentioned in his post:
“While sweeping the tiles outside the lab, we collected 250 grams of dust from just 12 square meters. This indicates that around 21 kilograms of dust per stremma (1,000 square meters) fell yesterday in Heraklion! The photo displays the dust magnified 45 times under a stereoscope.”
