Mayor Panagiotis Simandirakis filed a complaint regarding the disruption of Polio’s normal operations after an employee and the Deputy Mayor were physically attacked.
The details of the lawsuit received unanimous approval during a city commission meeting earlier today:
“On September 5, 2025, at the Building Services Department, criminal acts occurred involving unidentified individuals who assaulted Construction Control Department employee Kon/nos Brokalakis and Deputy Mayor Nicholas Hazirakis. They faced manual violence, including an attack with a metal coffee bottle and a wooden stick about one meter long, which significantly disrupted the normal functioning of the service due to this unacceptable behavior.”
Simandirakis visited the Prosecutor’s Office alongside Deputy Mayor Nikos Hazirakis, who was subjected to the verbal and physical attack, as reported by zarpanews.gr.
Hazirakis mentioned that he and the affected engineer chose not to proceed with self-incrimination regarding the incident, although it is detailed in the complaint. “We won’t retract the autopsy report,” both Simandirakis and Hazirakis stated, emphasizing that the Planning Department will continue to operate unaffected by such incidents.
“One of our fellow citizens took it upon themselves to assault employees and the Deputy Mayor. This behavior is unacceptable. No citizen has the right to intimidate or obstruct municipal services,” declared Mayor Simandirakis.
“The Building Services Department operates transparently and in accordance with the law. This was upheld in this instance, where an assessment showed minor violations related to licensing for some small fills,” he added.
“Justice will prevail, and I want to assure the employees of the municipality of Chania that they are safe; the municipal authority stands with them. No one is above the law or can manipulate it,” he stated.
