Brussels has characterized the ongoing technical meetings in Washington regarding tariffs as productive.
According to Commission spokesman for trade, Olaf Gill, “Technical meetings are already in progress in Washington, and I can report that the first day has been very constructive. Tomorrow, European Trade Commissioner Maros Sefkowitz will meet with US Trade Representative Jamison Greer in Paris.”
This meeting is viewed as highly significant by European officials. There has been a surge in discussions following a phone call between European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and U.S. President Donald Trump, leading to notable advancements in a “positive environment,” as noted by Mr. Gill.
Meanwhile, the Commission refrained from commenting on whether it has received a letter, reportedly sent by the US to various trading partners, requesting improved offers with a deadline of Wednesday. “We do not comment on the various documents exchanged with the US. Following the call between Presidents von der Leyen and Trump, both parties agreed to accelerate the discussions. Therefore, we will not provide updates on ongoing negotiations,” the spokesman added.
