The European Commission has proposed a €2 fee on every small parcel entering Europe.
The majority of these packages originate from China.
“We are discussing a €2 charge per parcel, to be paid by the platform,” stated Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic during his address at the European Parliament in Brussels.
According to Sefcovic, approximately 4.6 billion parcels were imported into the EU last year. This initiative aims to enhance controls that need bolstering due to the rise in small parcel imports from Asia, particularly from platforms like Shein and Temu. Brussels is concerned that these platforms may shift their focus to the European market as the US prepares to increase tariffs on Chinese goods.
This measure was prompted by France, which proposed a “handling fee” for every small parcel imported into Europe in late April.
