The focus of a recent working meeting at the Aspropyrgos Town Hall was the planning of vital infrastructure projects aimed at improving daily life for residents of Aspropyrgos and West Attica. The meeting involved Regional Governor Nikos Chardalias and Mayor Yannis Ilias.
They extensively discussed the progress of ongoing regional projects and strategies to eliminate bureaucratic hurdles that hinder the timely execution of essential initiatives. Following the meeting, the Regional Governor, joined by the Mayor, visited several sites earmarked for major projects.
One notable site is the planned location for the 2nd General High School of Aspropyrgos, a project that has been in the works for over 20 years, with a budget around 11 million euros. Chardalias emphasized that the Region has prioritized this initiative from the beginning and has included it in the “Attica Regional Development Plan” for swift funding. He expressed the intention to finalize the programmatic agreement soon, aiming to deliver the school project to the community in the first half of 2028.
Next, the Regional Governor visited Agrokipio, a 35-acre area owned by the Region, recently reallocated to the Municipality of Aspropyrgos for a recreational space. On Chardalias’ recommendation, the Attica Regional Council approved a 49-year extension for the Municipality’s free use of this area. He expressed strong support for enhancing Agro Garden to create a modern, functional public space for West Attica’s residents.
“Each visit to West Attica is an opportunity to address long-standing issues that should be deemed obvious for us coming from grassroots communities,” stated Mr. Chardalias. “Balanced development across Attica municipalities will not be left to chance. We can no longer accept neighborhoods lacking basic infrastructure. We are committed to genuinely supporting citizens facing daily struggles.”
The Regional Governor asserted that improving life quality in West Attica is a strategic priority. To this end, a comprehensive development program with a budget of 546.3 million euros has been crafted – the largest ever approved by the Region, introduced at the onset of the current regional administration.
Skaramanga Triple Hub: “No More Delays.”
In this context, Mr. Chardalias highlighted the critical project of the Skaramanga triple junction, which is expected to significantly benefit West Attica and the surrounding regions and is now officially entering the implementation phase after decades. “The Region has completed the relevant study and is actively working to integrate it into a specific funding protocol,” the Regional Governor noted, adding, “This project is a non-negotiable priority for us, as we have stated publicly multiple times. There is no room for further delays. We anticipate a quick response from the Ministry of Infrastructure and its new leadership. The Council of Ministers approved the project tender in January, and we expect the tender process to commence within 2025, funded by the Ministry’s Public Investment Programme.”
In response to questions regarding the potential acquisition of the Aspropyrgos-owned Attica TV station by the Region, Mr. Chardalias clarified that such rumors are entirely unfounded and misleading. “Supporting free expression is vital, and the work there is commendable. However, I have never intended to venture into publishing or television entrepreneurship,” the Regional Governor stated.
Mayor Giannis Elias expressed gratitude to the Regional Governor for the excellent collaboration in prioritizing projects crucial for local residents, particularly in overcoming long-standing bureaucratic obstacles. “Currently, there are numerous projects underway in Aspropyrgos. We are optimistic that with the Region’s continued support, we will make significant progress. We also appreciate the Region’s assistance in acquiring an electric garbage truck from EDSNA, with more vehicles to come to enhance our services,” Elias remarked.
The Regional Governor was accompanied by West Attica Deputy Regional Governor Kleanthis Varelas and Special Secretary of the Region of Attica Elena Rapti.
