Recently, the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature (HSPN), which serves as the National Operator for the International “Blue Flag” Program in Greece, announced the latest awards for beaches, marinas, and tourist boats.
Compared to 2024, there are only two fewer Blue Flag beaches this year. While some beaches lost their designation, several others received the award. In 2024, there were 625 Blue Flag beaches, while this year’s count is 623.
In Attica, two beaches have been removed from the list: Karavi Beach in Schinias (Municipality of Marathon) and the 1st Limanaki Daskaleiou Keratea – Solo Pino Beach (Municipality of Lavreotiki). Both failed to meet the strict criteria set by the organization for 2025 and have thus been excluded.
The Blue Flag program assesses several criteria, including:
- Quality of bathing waters (samples must be free from sewage or microbial contamination)
- Cleanliness and effective waste management
- Beach organization, such as the presence of lifeguards and informational signage
- Accessibility for persons with disabilities (PWD)
- Environmental awareness and educational activities
