“In my pursuit to rectify the injustice I faced—having spent 16 months in prison and denied the opportunity to assume the role of Mayor of Himara—I have presented crucial evidence to the Supreme Court highlighting the illegitimacy of my trial,” stated Fredi Beleris, MEP from New Democracy and EPP. He referred to the “concealment of her past conviction by judge Irena Gjoka” in an official announcement.
Mr. Beleris added, “Judge Irena Gjoka, who sentenced me, herself faced a conviction for forgery in Greece, receiving a three-month prison term that was later converted to a fine, followed by her deportation from Greece. This background explains her animosity towards the Greek national minority and its representatives.”
“Not only did she act unlawfully as a judge, but as president of the Special Court in 2023, she employed illegal procedures and used fabricated evidence against me. According to the Constitution, a convicted individual is disqualified from serving as a judge in the Republic of Albania, let alone as president of the GJKKO, the nation’s highest court. This clearly illustrates the unlawful and politically charged nature of the proceedings against me.”
“I was arrested by a prosecutor who is currently detained for misconduct in nine cases, and I was convicted by a judge with a criminal record who should not be part of our judicial system. Therefore, I am formally requesting that the Supreme Court of Albania reassess the decisions made in my case. I remain hopeful that Albanian justice will ultimately prevail—though perhaps delayed, light must conquer darkness,” Mr. Beleris concluded.
