Just days after their encounter in the third-place match of the Euroleague Final-4, Panathinaikos and Olympiacos are set to clash on Friday night (29/5, 21:00) for the opening game of the Stoiximan GBL finals series.
Following their European triumph, the green team aims to assert their supremacy in Greece. Coach Ergin Ataman, in a less than cheerful demeanor, mentioned that the outcome will hinge on his players’ on-court performance, while keeping the final roster options open.
“We’ve faced Olympiacos multiple times this season. We know their team well and will be prepared for the finals. Our goal is to claim the title. That’s our focus.”
When asked what Panathinaikos needs to improve for the initial game, he stated:
“We must deliver strong performances on the court.”
Regarding the message to his players following the Final Four:
“The Final Four is behind us. Our priority now is to secure the title and perform effectively.”
On what will be crucial for Panathinaikos to win:
“Performance. We simply need to execute well on the court.”
As for player availability for Game 1:
“I will determine the roster tomorrow night. Right now, I’m uncertain.”
On the significance of home-court advantage:
“The only advantage in this series is having the home crowd.”
Regarding Matas Lesor’s availability:
“I can’t say at this moment. I truly don’t know.”
Slukas: “These derbies against Olympiacos are like no other – Our entire season depends on it”
Kostas Slukas issued a motivational call for the team to regroup and reinforce their standing in Greece, addressing reporters at OAKA during training, just two days before the finals against Olympiacos.
Here’s what Panathinaikos’ captain had to say:
“After the disappointment in Abu Dhabi, our performance in the semi-final fell short, and we didn’t meet expectations. We warranted our loss.”
He underscored the critical goal ahead:
“We’ve invested nine months into this championship, and we aim to be prepared on our home floor with our fans, striving for a 1-0 lead. This derby is unique and crucial for both teams’ seasons. Failing to win the championship would cast a negative shadow over our season. It will depend on our determination and skills. We must protect our home turf.”
He added:
“As professional athletes, it’s essential to move beyond the past and concentrate on the present and future. Our goal is to secure the championship and prove we are the best team in Greece.”
