Amazon has rejected claims that it intends to disclose the impact of U.S. tariffs on product prices on its platform. This comes in response to criticism from the White House regarding the alleged plan.
According to a report by Punchbowl News, the company, founded by Jeff Bezos, was expected to display alongside sale prices the portion attributed to tariffs levied by U.S. President Donald Trump on key trading partners.
In response, U.S. presidential spokeswoman Caroline Levitt accused Amazon during a press briefing of engaging in a “hostile and political action,” citing the company’s partnership with a Chinese propaganda organization.
Amazon clarified that it has never considered marking tariffs on its main retail website and has not implemented this on any of its platforms. A spokesperson mentioned that the team behind Amazon Haul, its low-cost online store, has explored the possibility of applying import duties on specific products.
Reports indicate that numerous third-party sellers on Amazon have increased their prices in anticipation of the tariffs’ effects.
Experts and businesses anticipate a particularly pronounced impact on imports of finished goods or parts from China, with tariffs imposed by Trump reaching as high as 145%.
