Administrative Committee Issues Addressed by the International Association of Independent Dry Bulk Carriers (Intercargo)
The International Association of Independent Dry Bulk Carriers (Intercargo) convened its biannual meeting in Guangzhou, China, marking the first time this event has been held in China since the organization’s inception, as announced by president Yannis Xylas.
Key discussions focused on various challenges, including the changing global regulatory environment, the EU emissions framework, operational safety, cybersecurity, ship management, terminal issues, ship recycling regulations, and the implications of recent International Maritime Organization (IMO) developments.
Members actively participated in shaping Intercargo’s strategic objectives, notably the Dry Bulk Management Standard (DryBMS) overseen by the Centre of Excellence and the Association’s Quality Committees.
Considerable attention was given to greenhouse gas emissions and the industry’s progress towards achieving net zero, with strong support for the IMO’s environmental goals affirmed.
Nonetheless, concerns about the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) and its effects on tramp shipping persist, prompting calls for more pragmatic regulatory strategies.
The next meeting is scheduled for November in Athens.
