This morning, a significant event unfolded at the Acropolis, where 15 individuals were arrested for raising the Palestinian flag on the historic site.
The detainees, all members of the New Left party and its Youth wing, were involved in a tense standoff with police, as demonstrated in photos capturing their removal. As they were taken away, they flashed the victory sign for the cameras.
The SYRIZA Youth quickly responded, accusing the government of supporting Israel. A post from the group stated, “Stop the genocide in Gaza now” and “Free our detained comrades”.
SYRIZA Calls for the Release of Detained New Left Members
SYRIZA has demanded that the detainees be released, condemning the government for its “well-known repressive face.”
In their official statement, SYRIZA declared:
“Today, the Mitsotakis government once again displayed its familiar repressive tactics by sending police to arrest 15 members of the New Left party and its Youth wing, who raised the Palestinian flag at the Acropolis.”
“This is how the expression of solidarity with the suffering people of Palestine is met with punishment—reminding Mr. Mitsotakis of his government’s failure and unsettling senior ministers and ND officials who justify the violent actions of the Israeli state in Gaza.”
“We demand the immediate release of all detainees at the Athens Police Headquarters (GADA), and we continue to urge the government to unequivocally condemn the ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people.”
