Vassilis Kikilias, the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, visited the Mytilene port and the Coast Guard.
“Our islands are a strategic asset, serving as both our gems and the forefront of our tourism industry. It’s important to note that Mytilene, along with other islands in the northeastern Aegean, such as Chios and Kos, have endured challenges over the years. Recently, other islands like Rhodes, Crete, and Gavdos have also faced difficulties. Nevertheless, the Coast Guard is committed to protecting our entire coastline, which spans 18,500 miles and encompasses our maritime borders,” the minister stated.
In his remarks, Kikilias announced plans to strengthen the Coast Guard: “From Mytilene, I am pleased to announce that we will be recruiting for the upcoming season in roles related to the Coast Guard, in coordination with the government and the Ministry of Interior.
It is time for all port authorities to enter a new era and serve our citizens more effectively and modernly, allowing port staff to engage actively in port operations.”
Finally, in response to a pertinent inquiry, Kikilias revealed that efforts are underway to expedite the process for constructing a new Coast Guard building in Mytilene. “The Ministry’s technical services have begun studying plans for a new facility. I hope to see these processes move forward swiftly, in line with existing needs. The demands are significant, and we aim to establish a new building for both the port authority and the Coast Guard,” he concluded.
