Russian President Vladimir Putin has suggested halting his invasion of Ukraine along the existing frontline as part of his efforts to negotiate a peace deal with U.S. President Donald Trump, according to a report by the Financial Times, citing sources close to the situation.
During a meeting earlier this month in St. Petersburg, Putin informed Steve Whitcoff, Trump’s special envoy, that Russia might relinquish its claims to the regions in four partially occupied Ukrainian provinces that are still under Kyiv’s control, the newspaper reported, referencing three sources.
Whitcoff is scheduled to visit Russia for discussions with Putin later this week, as announced by White House spokesperson, Caroline Levitt, earlier today.
“We are optimistic about making progress” on the Ukraine situation, the spokesperson stated, adding that President Trump has voiced frustration with both Ukraine and Russia due to the stalled efforts to end the conflict.
