Today, farmers and livestock producers staged a symbolic blockade at the Rizomylos junction in response to the alarming spread of smallpox.
Blocking the old Larissa-Volo highway with their tractors after noon, they voiced their frustration over the loss of cattle.
Mr. Theocharis Seskliotis, chairperson of the Rizomylos Agricultural Association, stated that following the recent floods, the outbreak of smallpox has dealt a devastating blow to livestock farming. He reported losing half of his herd to the floods and is still awaiting compensation. The additional impact of smallpox has only worsened the situation. “We can’t fight it,” Seskliotis lamented.
The government’s total lack of vital protective measures, delays in vaccinations, insufficient veterinary services, and failure to compensate affected farmers are leading to the near collapse of the sheep and goat industry. Mr. Thodoris Georgadakis, president of the Federation of Agricultural Associations of Magnesia, conveyed the urgent demands of farmers, emphasizing their struggle for survival.
