The community of Lamia is in profound mourning following the tragic passing of Deputy Mayor Kostas Stavrogiannis in a devastating road accident early Sunday morning. The incident occurred at 5:40 AM on the new ring road at Profitis Ilias, just before the hospital exit.
The 64-year-old Deputy Mayor was a passenger in a Renault, driven by his 54-year-old wife, Yiota Koumbarou, when it collided head-on with a Mercedes, operated by a 34-year-old well-known local professional heading towards KEPP.
Kostas Stavrogiannis was found deceased at the scene, while his wife sustained serious injuries and was promptly taken to Lamia Hospital. The Mercedes driver suffered minor injuries.
Notably, Deputy Mayor Dimitris Kiritsis was driving nearby and was one of the first to arrive at the scene, offering assistance alongside other bystanders until emergency services arrived.
In a tragic coincidence, one of the police officers who responded to the incident was the victim’s brother, who was on duty with the Lamia Traffic Police at the time.
The Mayor of Lamia, Panourgias Papaioannou, immediately visited the hospital, visibly shaken by the news. In a statement to LamiaReport, he shared, “Just a short while ago we were together, sharing laughs and jokes. I can hardly believe it. The municipality is in mourning. Kostas was a man whose name is synonymous with the Municipality of Lamia. Our thoughts are with his family, especially his beloved wife, Giota.”
The heartbreaking news of Kostas Stavrogiannis’s death has left a mark on the local community, as he was a well-respected figure with a long-standing career in local governance. Investigations into the accident are currently underway.
