In Greece, a total of 701,823 property cleanup declarations have been submitted following the deadline on Sunday, June 15, 2025. This initiative is part of a national strategy aimed at wildfire prevention, mandating property owners to remove vegetation and flammable materials from their land.
Significant Last-Minute Submissions
Data from Civil Protection authorities indicates a notable surge in submissions during the final week. On the last day alone, nearly 90,000 declarations were submitted via the government’s digital platform at https://akatharista.apps.gov.gr.
An impressive 329 out of 334 municipalities across Greece have registered with the platform, a substantial increase from 55% (185 municipalities) in 2024. This high level of participation greatly enhances local fire prevention efforts.
Tighter Deadlines and Upcoming Inspections
Officials from Civil Protection view the total declarations as a positive development, particularly given the shorter deadline this year, in contrast to last year’s extended cutoff of July 15, 2024.
Authorities are now entering the inspection phase, where systematic checks will be conducted by both municipal services and the Fire Department. Those who do not comply will face administrative fines, and criminal charges may be pursued for false declarations.
New Enforcement Powers for the Fire Department
A Joint Ministerial Decision (KYA) has empowered the Fire Service to investigate reports from citizens regarding uncleared properties, conduct inspections, and impose penalties as needed.
Additionally, municipalities must carry out random inspections covering at least 5% of all declarations within their jurisdiction, ensuring comprehensive enforcement.
