The European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, unveiled the European Commission’s principal strategies for the maritime sector during a visit to the Hellenic Chamber of Shipping offices.
The discussion primarily focused on enhancing the competitiveness of European shipping while aligning development strategies with international regulations set by the IMO. Special attention was given to various areas, including the shipbuilding sector, coastal shipping, yachting, port infrastructure (such as marinas), the green transition, and the importance of educating and inspiring the next generation in the shipping industry.
The Chamber’s President, George Alexandratos, expressed gratitude to the Commissioner and his team for the meaningful and open dialogue, stating that “it is the responsibility of all – political leaders and institutional bodies – to uphold achievements with well-documented and clear arguments.”
Additionally, he emphasized that “both we and the EU member states must remember that a vital aspect of competitiveness is the support of small and medium-sized shipping enterprises, which account for over 50% of the total in Greece.”
