Vassilis Kikilias, Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, and Olga Kefalogianni, Minister of Tourism, held a joint meeting with Bud Darr, Executive Chairman and CEO of the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), to discuss key issues surrounding cruise activities in Greece.
Kikilias emphasized the role of cruising as a vital component for the development of Greece’s islands within a sustainable tourism framework. He noted that the introduction of cruise fees is a decision made by the central government and is aligned with plans to enhance critical port infrastructure on the islands.
He expressed that the aim is to provide safe, functional facilities, improve visitor accessibility, and ensure effective management of natural resources.
Kikilias underscored the importance of collaborating with cruise industry representatives and CLIA to ensure effective planning. This can be achieved by either implementing visitor limits at specific destinations or by extending the tourist season.
Moreover, it was agreed to form a joint working group, including representatives from the ministries and CLIA, at the level of general secretaries. This group will focus on establishing a sustainable cooperation channel and addressing issues related to cruising.
Finally, there was a consensus that the growth of the cruise industry should focus on new, alternative destinations with an emphasis on sustainability and quality.
