A prominent Turkish businessman is currently in custody of the Syros port authority, facing charges of domestic violence.
He is accused of assaulting and physically abusing his wife on June 4 while aboard his luxury yacht. The 38-year-old has a pending Red Notice against him due to a previous conviction of over 14 years by the Smyrna court.
Witnesses to the Assault
The incident came to light during a Coast Guard patrol in the “Platys Gialos” sea area, where authorities discovered the businessman’s yacht, flagged by Great Britain. The 42-year-old wife was found to have suffered a severe beating. Port officials reported visible facial injuries on her, inflicted by her husband.
Upon realizing the presence of the coastguard, the businessman attempted to flee, prompting a manhunt. The coastguard notified the police, and for several hours, he managed to evade capture. Ultimately, he was apprehended around noon on June 5 and placed in custody.
Victim Returns to Turkey
After the traumatic incident, the 42-year-old woman was taken to the Mykonos health center on the evening of June 4 for initial medical treatment. She was informed about available support services for domestic violence victims but declined any further assistance, stating her intention to return to Turkey.
Businessman Denies Allegations
The businessman has denied the allegations of violence against his wife during his statement to the coast guard. He is expected to appear before judicial authorities soon.
Notably, during the fingerprinting process in Mykonos, it was revealed that he is wanted as a fugitive by Turkish authorities, with a Red Notice issued against him since February 2025. He has been sentenced to 14 years and two months by the 5th Smyrna High Court for charges of robbery and slander.
