A mountaineer who fell into a ravine in Drama on Sunday afternoon has been found deceased. He was located unconscious just before 9 a.m. today.
A Super Puma helicopter successfully reached the site where the mountaineer had been moved by personnel from EMAK (Special Disaster Response Unit). The incident occurred when a bear attacked the climber and his friend, causing him to tumble into the ravine while they were en route to the crash site of an old Hellenic Air Force fighter plane from approximately 77 years ago, located in the Frakto forest.
An ambulance transported the mountaineer to the military airport of Chrysoupoli, where he was transferred to another ambulance that took him to Kavala Hospital.
It’s important to note that the area where the incident took place is highly inaccessible, characterized by dense forests and steep terrain.
A total of 37 EMAK firefighters participated in the operation to locate and retrieve the mountaineer.
On Monday, rescuers reached the incident site and found one of the two men alive; he had climbed a tree to escape danger. Once it was safe, he called emergency services via 112 for assistance. Reports indicate he was among the first to venture into the ravine, which is over 500 meters deep, in search of his friend. He managed to descend to a depth of 25 meters but did not find any sign of him.
Rescue efforts continued throughout the night, with teams descending as deep as 300 meters. However, they had to halt due to darkness and perilous conditions.
