Officials from the Commission and industry leaders in Southeastern Europe have indicated that a new surge in electricity prices may occur this summer, reminiscent of previous market conditions.
Energy suppliers are already anticipating a spike in tariffs for May and June. Despite a notable decline in wholesale prices, green tariff rates have increased by over 60% over the past two months, with the cost per kilowatt-hour nearing 19 cents for independent suppliers by June.
Market representatives suggest this price trend is partly due to the heightened demand expected from air conditioning during the summer months. Some companies are also raising prices to offset decreased profit margins experienced during periods of elevated wholesale costs.
The dominant market player, PPC, initiated the trend by increasing its special tariff by 16.5% in May, followed by an additional 5.88% hike in June, resulting in an overall increase of more than 22%.
