On Friday, U.S. President Donald Trump attributed the recent Russian bombardment of Ukraine to actions taken by Kiev, which resulted in at least six fatalities and over eighty injuries during the early hours of the day.
Trump remarked to reporters aboard Air Force One, “They gave Putin a reason to come in and ruthlessly bomb them last night,” while discussing the impact of Ukraine’s drone strikes against Russian military airfields.
This escalation followed a warning from Moscow about retaliation for Ukrainian drone attacks that had previously destroyed strategic bombers within Russia.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced in a video message that three rescue workers lost their lives in Kyiv due to the bombings: “The rescuers who were killed in Kyiv had hurried to the site of an earlier assault and tragically fell victim to a subsequent Russian strike.” Additionally, two fatalities were reported in the town of Chernihiv in the north, and one in Lutsk, located in the northwest near the Polish border.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Shibiha stated on Platform X that Russia’s response to the destruction of its aircraft involved “attacks on civilians in Ukraine… Multi-storey buildings were targeted, and energy infrastructure was damaged.”
The Russian Defense Ministry indicated that its forces had conducted strikes against military targets as retaliation for what they termed Ukrainian “terrorist acts” on Russian soil.
