Russia’s Defense Ministry announced today that its forces carried out a significant and successful attack on military and military-related sites in Ukraine overnight, responding to what it termed Ukrainian “terrorist actions” against Russia.
This statement followed reports from Ukrainian officials about a wave of missiles and drones launched by Russia targeting the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, early this morning, resulting in three fatalities.
Russia has accused Ukraine of orchestrating a deadly bombing of a railway bridge in western Russia over the weekend, which exploded while a train with 388 passengers was passing beneath it.
The incident left seven dead and 155 injured, though Kiev has not claimed responsibility. Ukraine also launched attacks on Russian bombers at air bases during the same weekend. President Vladimir Putin informed U.S. President Donald Trump this week of his intent to retaliate.
The Kremlin confirmed today that the recent strikes were a direct response to “terrorist acts” in Kiev.
“All operations conducted under the special military operation in Ukraine are a response to the actions of the Kiev regime, which has taken on the characteristics of a terrorist organization,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the media.
Ukraine frequently accuses Russia of terrorism, referencing attacks resulting in thousands of civilian deaths. Both sides maintain that they do not intentionally target civilians.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, long-range weapons were employed in their strikes against Ukraine.
“In retaliation for the terrorist actions by the Kiev regime, the Russian Armed Forces executed a large-scale strike overnight using long-range precision weapons from air, sea, and land,” the ministry stated.
It claimed that the attack aimed at “Ukrainian design offices, facilities involved in the production and repair of weapons and military equipment, assembly workshops for offensive drones, air training and weapons centers of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, and military equipment depots. The objectives of the strike were achieved, and all targeted sites were successfully hit.”
The Defense Ministry also reported that Russian troops have gained control of the settlement of Fedorifka in eastern Ukraine.
Reuters has not been able to independently verify this information.
