This morning, Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited the powder-smoked 111th Fighter Wing, where he served 33 years ago in the 346 Squadron.
Beginning his tour in Magnesia at the military airport of Nea Anchialos, Mitsotakis observed warplanes conducting patrols and interception missions over the Aegean Sea. He was welcomed at 346 Squadron by Vice Admiral Demosthenes Grigoriadis, who was a lieutenant there at the time, along with the commanders of all squadrons.
The Prime Minister enjoyed a coffee and engaged in conversation with the fighter pilots, including one of the three women flying F-16s in the Air Force. He emphasized the government’s commitment to strengthening and modernizing the Armed Forces by 2030, highlighting it as a key component in building a robust Greece capable of addressing security and stability challenges in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean.
He also highlighted the launch of the third frigate, Belharra, and noted progress in negotiations for a fourth frigate, which would involve 25% Greek industrial participation.
Mitsotakis also acknowledged the vital role of the Armed Forces’ personnel in this overarching effort, describing military service for conscripts as an “experience of a lifetime.” He indicated that both he and the minister aim to enhance the effectiveness of this service.
Before continuing his tour in Magnesia, the Chief of the General Staff extended an invitation for him to fly from the airport at some point, reminiscent of his father’s experiences there. The fighter pilots also presented him with a watch bearing the squadron’s emblem.
This visit marks another occasion for Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the location of his military service from 1992-1993, as he had previously toured Nea Anchialos before the 2019 elections and again in 2022.
