Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke with his U.S. counterpart, Donald Trump, for one hour and ten minutes yesterday, but they did not reach an agreement on a face-to-face meeting. Nonetheless, both leaders acknowledged the necessity of such a meeting and agreed it should be properly planned.
“Although no meeting was agreed upon, there is a shared understanding of its importance, and adequate preparation is essential. We need concrete outcomes to be documented at the highest levels,” stated Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov during a press briefing.
Focus on Ukraine and Recent Attacks
Peskov described their conversation as “constructive and necessary,” emphasizing that they covered many critical issues. The situation in Ukraine was a key topic, with Putin providing Trump detailed information on the outcomes of the Istanbul discussions. He also addressed recent attacks, attributing responsibility to what he termed the “Kiev regime,” which he labeled as engaging in terrorist activities.
“Kiev is acting like a terrorist regime.”
When reporters inquired about the possibility of halting negotiations with Ukraine in response to new attacks, Peskov left that option open, indicating that Russia would consider Kiev’s actions going forward.
“The fact that the Kiev regime exhibits characteristics of a terrorist regime cannot be overlooked in future negotiations,” the Kremlin spokesman noted.
This call was the fourth between Putin and Trump since the latter took office, occurring during a period of significant diplomatic strain amid developments on the Ukrainian front.
