Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke with Pope Leo IV by phone on Wednesday, expressing to the leader of the Roman Catholic Church his commitment to pursuing peace through diplomatic means. He also accused Ukraine of attempting to escalate hostilities.
According to the Kremlin, “Vladimir Putin highlighted that the Kiev regime is aiming to escalate the conflict and is carrying out sabotage against civilian infrastructure within Russian territory.”
The Kremlin’s statement further noted that Putin emphasized to the Pope that “a final, just, and comprehensive resolution to the crisis in Ukraine necessitates addressing its root causes.”
