A pro-euthanasia rights activist, arrested by Swiss authorities for the first documented use of the “suicide capsule,” reportedly took his own life through assisted suicide.

As reported by the Independent, 47-year-old Dr. Florian Villette was detained last year in connection with the death of a 64-year-old woman, facing charges of “inciting and abetting suicide” and “manslaughter with intent.” He was released two months later in December after authorities dismissed the manslaughter charge.

The director of Exit International and creator of the Sarco capsule, Dr. Philip Nietzsche, stated that the legal proceedings severely impacted Dr. Villette’s mental health.

According to the Dutch news outlet Volkskrant, the activist ended his life in Germany last month through assisted suicide. Prior to his death on May 5, Dr. Villette had suffered injuries from falling out of a third-floor window, leading to ongoing mental health evaluations by specialists.

“When Florian was suddenly released from custody in early December 2024, he was a changed man,” Dr. Nietzsche shared. “His warm smile and confidence were gone, replaced by trauma from the incarceration and the baseless accusation of strangulation.”

A friend of Dr. Villette, named Laura, confirmed to the Dutch newspaper that his time in prison transformed him. “This once friendly, positive man became anxious and suspicious, losing trust even in his closest friends,” she explained. “He started to retreat into his own world, distancing himself from those around him.”

Dr. Villette, who led the pro-euthanasia group The Last Resort, had been released in the Safhausen region after his first use of the Sarco capsule, a sealed chamber that dispenses gas at the press of a button. While authorities cleared him of homicide charges, they maintained “strong suspicion” regarding the incitement and aiding of suicide, according to Swiss prosecutors.

Dr. Nietzsche characterized the strangulation allegations as “absurd,” asserting that he witnessed the woman’s death via video in a wooded area in Safhausen, confirming the device operated as intended.

The Sarco capsule allows an individual seated in a reclining chair to push a button, releasing nitrogen gas into the chamber. The person becomes unconscious and dies from asphyxiation within minutes.

Swiss law permits assisted suicide, provided the individual takes their own life without intervention from others, and those assisting do not act for personal gain, as detailed on an official government website. While “active assistance” in euthanasia is illegal, supplying means for voluntary suicide is permissible.

Dr. Florian Villette’s tragic suicide highlights the complexities surrounding assisted suicide, raising concerns about individuals with mental instability potentially utilizing it to end their lives.
