The Turkish mobster who fired at a NIS (National Intelligence Service) team last Tuesday afternoon on the Rysio provincial road in Thermi has been apprehended at dawn. This arrest was the result of a coordinated effort between the Organized Crime Unit of Thessaloniki and the EKAM (Special Anti-Terrorist Unit). He was found in a village situated in the mountainous area of Rhodope, near Komotini. Previously, the jeep used for their getaway was discovered in the Asprovalta region.
Details on the operation remain scarce. However, the arrested individual is confirmed to be the one who fired the shots and drove the jeep, which also contained two others being monitored by the NIS. He was the main target. Law enforcement utilized various technological tools for tracking, including phone data, surveillance footage, and intelligence insights. The Hellenic Police (ELAS) reached the village where the mobster was hiding by the following afternoon but deemed it too dangerous to act at that moment. They employed a drone for surveillance to assess his movements and strategize the arrest, ensuring they had a comprehensive understanding of the area and potential escape routes. The operation’s leaders ultimately decided to involve an EKAM unit, and at dawn, they apprehended the mobster while he was asleep.
According to ELAS sources, the two accomplices are still in Greece and have not managed to escape.
Efforts to track down and capture the other two individuals are ongoing. All three are suspected members of the notorious “Daltons” gang, involved in murders, drug trafficking, and other criminal activities. In 2023, six members of this gang, who were Turkish nationals, were murdered in Loutsa.
