Alice Weidel, co-leader of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, lauded Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban as a “beacon of freedom” during her address at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) held in Budapest.
Delivering her remarks in English, Weidel remarked, “The wind of change is blowing.” She criticized the German intelligence service for designating the AfD as a “far-right extremist” group, despite the party achieving second place in the recent elections. Weidel argued, “They are monitoring the opposition to portray the AfD as an enemy of the constitution, fabricating reasons to ban our party.”
With the audience erupting in applause, Weidel asserted that attempts by German courts to outlaw the AfD would not succeed.
The party is currently pursuing legal action against the classification made by the domestic intelligence agency.
This year’s gathering in Budapest is part of the broader Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) network, where Orban seeks to enhance connections among global right-wing groups.
The conference features prominent attendees, including Herbert Kickl, leader of Austria’s Freedom Party; Robert Fico, Prime Minister of Slovakia; and Irakli Kobakhidze, Prime Minister of Georgia.
Yesterday, during the opening of the event, Orban characterized Donald Trump’s presidency as “a significant cultural turning point.” He stated, “We will not be submerged in a sea of wokeness; we will not be overwhelmed by migrants. Donald Trump offered the world hope for a normal life and peace,” in his keynote address.
The former U.S. president shared a video message during the event, commending Orban as “a great man who is respected by all.” Trump added, “He has been an exceptional leader and is a very special person.”
