The municipalities of Serres, Lefkonas, and Christos have been placed under a state of emergency by the General Secretary of Civil Protection, Nikolaos Papaefstathiou. This decision aims to tackle the challenges and manage the consequences stemming from the discovery of elevated uranium levels in the water.
This measure was initiated following a request from Serres’ mayor, Varvara Mitliagka, and will be in effect for one month from its issuance, lasting until June 26, 2025.
The decision allows the Municipality of Serres and relevant authorities to mobilize emergency resources and financial support aimed at assisting affected residents and businesses, as well as expediting efforts for a swift and lasting solution to the issue.
In her official statement, Mayor Varvara Mitliagka remarked:
“The health and safety of our citizens are our top priority. Declaring these areas in a State of Emergency for Civil Protection is a crucial step that will enable us to take immediate and effective action, using all available resources to resolve the water quality issue.
I extend my gratitude to the General Secretary of Civil Protection for his swift response and assure our fellow citizens that we will do everything necessary to safeguard public health and restore normalcy as quickly as possible.”
