In criticizing the government’s approach to Greek-Turkish relations, PASOK’s Political Planning Officer and former minister Anna Diamantopoulou asserted that Turkey’s lifting of the casus belli is not significant by itself.
“Lifting the casus belli isn’t crucial on its own. Turkey will join Eurodefense and acquire weapons, while we won’t see any changes,” Ms. Diamantopoulou stated during her remarks to OPEN.
The former minister took issue with the government’s claim that Turkey’s participation in Eurodefense hinges solely on lifting the casus belli. “So, Turkey is allowed in and gets funding to produce weapons while posing a threat to an EU member state, and we gain nothing?” she questioned, emphasizing that Athens should set demands for Europe, such as securing our borders.
Additionally, she criticized Europe for discussing Eurodefense in terms of armaments alone and rebuked the prime minister for formulating Greece’s stance on lifting the casus belli through a broadcast announcement without a cabinet decision.
On Civil Service Tenure:
Ms. Diamantopoulou voiced concerns regarding the removal of tenure in the civil service, warning of potential instability where a government could dismiss contract workers, jeopardizing continuity within the civil service.
“We must reject a form of ‘modernity’ that leads to instability. The real issue is that laws are not enforced, despite the Constitution and the Public Service Code outlining 23 disciplinary offenses,” she emphasized.
